Regardless of the denomination, Christian churches share the tradition of communion. Communion is a wonderful covenant between you and Jesus, and each and every time you take communion it is the time to repent and be right with Jesus.
Depending on the denomination, communion may be offered at each service, weekly, every other week, or even monthly. Communion is the body and blood of Christ, which He sacrificed for us so that we can experience eternal life. There are specific instructions and verses in the Bible where Jesus tells us exactly what communion is and what the meaning behind it should be. In fact, the act of receiving Holy Communion is so important that it is talked about in all of the Gospels.
Let’s take a look at: Luke 22:14-21 (NIV)
14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”
17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to that man who betrays him.”
Remembering The Purpose Of Communion
These verses help us to remember that the only man who ever walked this Earth and was able to do it completely free of sin sacrificed His life and accepted the awful payment for our sins, so that we could live forever with God. Communion is one of the ways we are able to accept the gift the Lord Jesus Christ has given us. We have been provided with an amazing opportunity to be pure in the eyes of God, and we need to give thanks and show our love to Jesus for this gift.
